Business: “I want all this functionality delivered by date X — it’s tight, but we need it.”


Dev team: “We need to assess feasibility. Based on experience, there’s a real risk we won’t make it. Can we align on a realistic MVP given the go-live date?”


Business: “No. It’s all MVP. There’s no room for discussion!”


Recognize this conversation? I certainly do. It comes up in almost every change project.


Ambition is essential. But without realism, it quickly turns into risk:

  • Missing critical functionality
  • Reputational damage
  • Data quality issues


The real challenge isn’t choosing between scope or timeline. It’s finding the right balance between the two.


The good news? There are ways to navigate this tension and create alignment across

stakeholders without compromising outcomes.
